Users from all over the world began reporting it through social networks and forums Some artists’ official videos no longer appear on YouTube. The same thing happens when using certain songs in videos, which ends up causing an error that says “Video not available. This video contains content from SESAC. It is not available in your country” and does not play.
What is happening? What is all this due to? We will explain it to you, but we already tell you this YouTube has lost very popular music which now cannot be played on the platform.
YouTube failed to renew licenses with SESAC and lost music from Nirvana, Adele, Ariana Grande and many other artists
As happened with TikTok, when it failed to renew its contract with Universal Music Group at the beginning of the year, now Many songs stopped appearing on YouTube for a similar reason.
It turns out that recently YouTube was left without the music licenses from the Society of European Theater Authors and Composers (SESAC) and failed to reach a renewal agreement.
SESAC represents hundreds of artists, including giants like Adele, Ariana Grande, Nirvana, REM and Kesha. Indeed, His catalog consists of over 1.5 million songswhich can no longer be used on YouTube as there is no licensing agreement.
What happens when you try to search for SESAC-licensed music on YouTube or YouTube Music? Any of these scenarios:
- It is impossible to find official videos of licensed musicnor directly with the songs (on YT Music), although they are still present in the search database.
- Remix videos, short films, or any other type of video that contains licensed music now shows an error that says “This video contains SESAC content” and does not play.
The YouTube team was contacted by our friends at TecniServiciosPro on this topic. This is what they responded:
“We have been in good faith negotiations with SESAC to renew our existing agreement. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach a fair agreement before its deadline. We take copyright very seriously, and as a result, content represented by SESAC is no longer available on YouTube in the United States and other regions. “We are in active negotiations with SESAC and hope to reach a new agreement as soon as possible.”
It’s just like what happened with TikTok, Both sides failed to agree on a new contract.. Therefore, YouTube cannot use the music because it would violate copyright laws on creations licensed by SESAC.
Will they reach an agreement later? We don’t know, but we hope so. Why? why this it could end up affecting more than just YouTubealso to the users and artists themselves.
