If you are a regular reader of this page, you will know that RiMusic is one of our favorites and most recommended for listening to YouTube music in the background for free or as a free and ad-free alternative to Spotify. However, we would be lying to you if we said it was a perfect app. The reality is that it usually fails and at any moment it can stop working without warning because it depends on third-party services (YouTube Music) which are beyond the reach of its developer.
The most common RiMusic problem occurs when you try to play a song and the app says “An unknown playback error occurred«. Below we explain what exactly it is and how to fix it.
Why doesn’t RiMusic work?
Normally, RiMusic stops working because Google made a change to the YouTube Music API used by this application to get the content. Typically, this isn’t a direct block from Google to RiMusic, so the error is usually resolved within hours or days as developers adapt the app to the API change.
The annoying thing is that it happens without warning, causing many users to stumble upon a error playing and downloading music in RiMusic without knowing why. But don’t be alarmed, these are the official media where you can find out firsthand what happened to RiMusic:

This is the ultimate solution for RiMusic when it doesn’t work
The solution when RiMusic doesn’t work is almost always update the app to a newer version. Now, if the error just occurred, there may not yet be a newer version available that fixes the problem (You have to be patient with the developers!). Therefore, the best thing you can do is this:
- Open the RiMusic app.
- Tap the three lines from the top right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll down the menu to go to Various.
- Continues Enable update checking.
- Choose Enabled.
- Now, move on Check now.
If an update is available, you’ll see a message on the screen letting you know. To update, click on the option Open the GitHub website and download the latest version or just press this RiMusic direct download link on GitHub (then click on the .apk file in the Resources section).
By the way, once all this is done, the application will automatically notify you if a new version is available when you open it. You won’t have to repeat the steps we explained above, although you can always go to the Miscellaneous section yourself to manually check if there is a pending update.
In case this doesn’t solve your RiMusic problem, you may need to clear cache and data from Settings > Applications > RiMusic > Clear cache/data. This should be enough to restart the app successfully.
