Engwe, one of the most popular electric bike brands in recent years, has launched a new folding ebike with great autonomy for city trips. It’s the Engwe L20 SE, very similar to the Engwe T14 we reviewed recently, but with a bigger battery and a more robust build with 20-inch wheels for driving even on smooth roads.
We got the Engwe L20 SE and have been using it for commuting and walking around town. Below, we’ll tell you about our experience with it, what we liked and what we didn’t. join us!
Engwe L20 SE: A foldable and stable electric bike that will be your reliable companion
Although the big wheels make you think otherwise, the Engwe L20 SE is an eBike designed for urban areas and city dwellers who don’t have much space to store their bikes. Check out its technical sheet and then we’ll get into the details.
What does the Engwe L20 SE electric bike look like?
Engwe L20 SE is made from aluminum alloy and has a modern urban bike design. It’s very comfortable for both tall and short people, at least in my experience. The manufacturer is suitable for people with a height of 1.55 m to 2.10 m, the maximum weight is 120 kg. Keep in mind that the height of the saddle and handle can be adjusted to better adapt to any user.
By the way, the saddle has integrated suspension with cushion drop and makes riding on uneven roads more comfortable. It also has a front suspension fork, which provides more stability and smoothness in the ride.
It has a luggage rack in the back and a basket in the front. In addition, it includes an accessory that is installed in the central part of the frame so that you can safely hold water bottles. Similarly, it includes a red brake light at the back and a white light at the front, which has a good power to illuminate the road at night.
The wheels are 20 inches in diameter and 3 inches wide and covered with thick rubber to handle mild obstacles. They are suitable for smooth roads, but they allowed me to use the bike on many stones on the road without any problems.
The 7-speed Shimano shifting system can be easily adjusted with the buttons on the handle. It has a color LCD screen that shows you lots of interesting information: battery level, current speed, assistance level, distance traveled, etc. It should be noted that although the brightness is not very high, I did not have a hard time seeing the information on the screen while driving in bright sunlight.
Ah! And we can’t stress the folding system that cuts the size in half. It folds into the center of the frame, the handle and the saddle so that it takes up very little space and you can carry it in the back of a car or carry it around the house without worry. Incidentally, it weighs 31 kg, but you can remove the battery to make it lighter.
How fast is the Engwe L20 SE bike?
To comply with European legislation, the Engwe L20 SE’s 250W motor is limited to a top speed of 25 km/h. But if the limit is removed by pressing a combination of buttons on the handle, it can reach a top speed of up to 40 km/h. Of course, we don’t recommend doing so because you can get penalized and risk your credibility.
The torque is 38 Nm and it offers 5 assisted pedalling. In my experience the best are 4 and 5 because they provide a significant boost when driving. However, if you want longer battery life and a more natural pedal, you’ll like Levels 1, 2 and 3 better. Likewise, it has three riding modes for use as a normal bicycle (without electric assistance), a motorcycle (electric only, without pedaling) or an ebike (electric with pedal assistance).
It is worth noting that it has mechanical disc brakes on both wheels and they work well. The bike brakes quickly and I had no problem with that.
How long does the battery last on the Engwe L20 SE electric bike?
According to the manufacturer, the Engwe L20’s 15.6 AH battery can last up to 140 kilometers with pedal assistance. In our tests, the autonomy ranged from 120 to 130 km. Remember that bike battery life depends on the weight of the rider, the level of electric assistance, the inclination of the road, etc. In electric-only mode, for example, the range is usually 55 km.
How long does this battery take to charge? About 5 hours. And the best thing is that you can take it out of the bike to carry it separately. By the way, the battery is protected by a key so that only the owner can remove it.
So… is the Engwe T14 a recommended electric bike?
Engwe L20 SE is a powerful, stable and comfortable folding electric bike. It is a great option for those who want an electric bike with a speed of 25 km/h and a range of up to 140 km.
It has a sleek design and sturdy construction for a smooth ride even on bumpy roads. It doesn’t take up much space when folded and the battery lasts a long time. Perhaps the only drawback is the price. 999 eurosIt’s not bad considering the performance and quality, but it makes it out of reach for many people.
