In the year When Windows 11 arrives in 2021, so will the facility that connects Android to computers. The Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) function allows APK files to run on a PC, so that from then on, Android applications can be opened on our Windows computers without going through an emulator first. The bad thing is that this is about to change.
In a recent statement by Microsoft, March 5, 2025 announced that the WSA feature will stop working in Windows 11. This means that users on Windows cannot install Android apps directly. The reason for the company’s decision is not yet known.
Windows 11 will end support for Android on March 5, 2025
Microsoft is ending support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore will no longer support all Windows and WSA-based apps and games starting March 5, 2025. Until then, support will continue to be available to customers. Customers who previously installed Amazon Appstore or Android apps on March 5, 2024 will continue to have access to those apps until the March 5, 2025 expiration date, Microsoft explained in a statement.
At the beginning of Windows 11, the ability to install APK files allowed Android applications purchased from the Amazon store to run without problems from this operating system. Since then it has been like that, which is undoubtedly very easy.
The relationship with Android is getting closer and closer, to the point where developers can download Android applications (Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook etc.) for a limited time after passing the company’s filter. Have a place there. Interestingly, it doesn’t happen in the same way because you have to perform a few extra steps to install Windows apps on Android.
And whether for the latter or otherwise, Microsoft’s sudden decision to end its relationship with Amazon and the Android Store is still surprising. As published in the official statement, his position seems to be firm. And while it’s not the end of the world (we’ll continue to run Android apps from Windows 11, just through emulators), it does mean a small setback to the multi-platform ecosystem that many have been dreaming of.
