Review of the Lenovo Legion tab: three months with iPad Mini of Android

Android tablets are returning after years of being something disappointing because, well, why shouldn’t you buy an iPad instead? As much as Android as a platform has improved tablet support and since Google has pushed stronger for the apps optimized by tablets, the experience has improved a lot. The limitation, therefore, arrived in hardware, since the tablets were enormous and powerful, or tiny and aligned by unusable. For years I wanted a compact Android tablet with top specifications, and it is finally what the Lenovo Legion card He delivered, even if technically it is not yet a product designed for me.

The Lenovo Legion Tab series has been in circulation for some time, offering smaller Android tablets with high -end chips and a lot of memory and memory. The attention behind these tablets was around the games and the creation of tablets perfectly optimized for that case of use. The medium -sized displays make room for a fairly large battery and for a correct cooling, although not narrow like a smartphone. I looked in Envy in this series, which was largely available only in China, since she made her debut, because she faces a place on the market that all the others are ignoring.

Today there are many really good Android tablets on the market. The OnePlus Pad series offers high quality hardware and a solid ecosystem at a fair price. The Samsung Galaxy Tab series has numerous options and those splendid AMOLED display. The Google Pixel tablet also presents a different use case to be a hub for the home, something that I liked to have on my desk for a long time. But for any “high -end” distance tablets, the large screens have been a commonplace. The Pixel tablet and the flagship phase of Galaxy Tab are generally the smallest of the deck and have a size of about 11 inches. For me, it was not the right solution. I wanted a small enough tablet to slide in the backpack without a second reflection on a flight and is easy enough to transport and use practically everywhere. The 11 -inch tablets, and even more the larger dimensions, do not adapt to that for me.

That’s why, when the Lenovo Legion Tab (Gen 3) I went on sale in the United States at the beginning of this year, I immediately took one.

The Legion card adapts perfectly to the account. A compact 8.8 -inch display, but with all the power that I could ask with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 under the hood, 12 GB of RAM and a lot of storage space at 256 GB. Now I have used this tablet for the best part of three months and I have some thoughts about it.

Starting with the hardware, I will return to the display again. The compact form factor here cannot be underestimated. This tablet is so perfectly sized for the trip, that my case of main use has been in mind. The 8.8 -inch display with its 16:10 ratio slips with a backpack with ease and is fully usable on a plane where other tablets are more a struggle. In planes with carriers, 11 -inch tablets adapt to barely, while the Legion tab adapt to space to save money. He also made much easier to store the tablet. The tablet is also very light, which opened the door to Adding a Magsafe style ring on the back of the case and be able to do it Use the supports To better place the tablet on a tray table or on the seat in front of you. That light weight makes even the seal for long flights or long movie/games sessions.

The same Legion tab is made of aluminum and has a solid build. It is robust and submissive. You never know how to look at it that it is a game tablet, and this is a choice that I really appreciate. Aluminum is rather inclined to fingerprints and other smudge, so I kept it in case 99% of the time. I also took a white version of the case (in the photo above) that Lenovo sells for one of the variants sold in China.

But what about folds and only big screen phones for that matter?

There is absolutely a topic to take for these devices during the Legion tab. But, like someone who uses a pixel 9 fold as a daily phone, I still find the Precious Legion tab for some reasons. First of all, using this movie or games tablet means that I am not emptying the phone battery all day. In particular on travel days, it is important. Secondly, there is proportions. Whether it’s a folding or large phone, the proportions are not designed for the consumption of the media. The games work better 16:10, and so also films and TV programs. The Legion tab offers a larger display than my fold, mainly only because it actually uses its space on the screen more efficiently.

The display itself, however, is not the bigger make evident. The 165Hz panel is fast for games and has a good flow over its brightness, but the backlight has some irregular areas. I would have preferred to have a 144Hz or 120Hz AMOLED panel instead of this LCD. It is perfectly acceptable as it is, but it could be better. The protection of the glass screen included is also a nice touch, but I ended up purchasing opaque plastic screen protection that makes a better overall viewing experience.

Accessories are also a key thing to talk about. Since this is not a tablet that has been sold globally, accessories are not easy to find. Applaudo Lenovo for having included not only a charger in the box, but also a two -piece case with coverage and support, as well as a tempered glass screen protection. As mentioned, I still ended up obtaining an opaque protector through AliexpressBut I’m also happy to see that they are other options Appearing on Amazon including other styles of cases and screen protections.

The battery life is also solid. Lenovo’s Android skin is a little aggressive about the cross -country apps while the device sleeps, leading to an excellent standby. This is a compromise that I can accept on a tablet. On several occasions I left the tablet on my desk, asleep for a week, and I collected it to find a lot of battery. The recharge is also quick with 45W on USB-C and with your choice of two USB-C ports.

Speaking of that Android skin, let’s talk about the software.

Lenovo does not make my favorite changes to Android, but the overall skin is relatively clean. This is not a “experience of the players” full of rag elements of design, but Lenovo has made a square design that, personally, is not my favorite. However, you will find the improvements of Google tablets including the Application Bar and the notifications of Android and the rapid settings on the same screen, but are divided into the middle in the view of the landscape. The Lenovo stock launcher is slow, slow and full of bizarre choices as just being able to remove the apps from the screen using long-term pop-up. I exchanged it quickly with Lawnchair, a pixel launcher clone, which accelerates things and seems much more familiar.

The performance as a whole during the general usability are a slightly mixed bag. With a Snapdragon 8 Jan 3 and 12 GB of RAM, it cannot Not Be fast, but I often find myself seeing pieces of delay and small sobs in places that I don’t expect. Overall, the experience is fast and fluid, but it is a bit frustrating to occasionally see things slowly run without an obvious reason. As mentioned, the exchange of the pitcher of shares does a lot to eliminate these sobs, but I would like to see Lenovo work on this. The Legion tab will receive three updates of the Android operating system during its life, but sent with Android 14, so it is one behind it.

Where this tablet is designed to shine it is in games and generally does it. I don’t do a lot of games for mobile devices, but I tried some titles in the Legion tab. Autumn guys and little big workshops are standbys for me and perform very well on this tablet. However, I was surprised to find out that Fortnite was a late mess. Regardless of the combination of settings that I tried, the game was at the limit of not playable. However, it was the only title that I came across with that problem. Other titles of light such as air control, radiant defense and the Rmpiatore also commit the tax evaison, it is not surprising that they were performed very well.

But the games really made a rear seat on this tablet simply a media consumption device, at least for me. It will be an excellent choice for players, but you can easily think of this as an iPad mini for Android, and it works in the same way.

My time with the Legion tab has so far been a pleasure. This is truly the tablet that I have wanted for years, but has a large red flag which, for many, is an understandable dealbreaker. Despite its $ 549 price ($ 50 more since it was launched for the first time), it lacks any form of safe biometry. There is no fingerprint sensor, no safe facial id. There is the recognition of the face, but it is based on the camera and, in poor, terrible words. Not only does it not work in situations in low lighting at all (as on a plane), but sometimes it doesn’t work. I had to save his face on several occasions just to be recognized again. When it works, the release of the face is quick, but too often it doesn’t work.

While I am willing to bear only using a pin, Lenovo should absolutely not give up at least a cheap fingerprint scanner on the sequel. Everything would be better than that.

So should you buy the Legion tab?

I think this tablet is one that adapts to a niche. It is not for everyone. There is a reason why Apple also updates the iPad Mini every few years, and this is because not everyone wants one.

Lenovo Legion Tab customers fit into one of the two basic molds in my mind. There is the demographic target, the mobile player. This customer wants a powerful device bigger than a phone, but not cumbersome as a natural size tablet. The Legion tab serves this purpose almost perfectly. The other customer are, well, me. Someone who wants an Android tablet and smaller who is powerful enough not to be an late mess and play the occasional game, but in the end he only worries about a smaller display for the consumption of the media. $ 549 are a high price to pay for this following a recent increase in prices, but there are so few options out there that, well, there is really no choice.

The Legion card is available in the United States only from the Lenovo website.
