Telegram is reacting with changes, after the arrest of its CEO, Pável Dúrov. The strong accusations that Telegram not only allows pirated content in its chats (for which Spain also thought of blocking its application in its country), but the organization of gangs and criminal acts, have made the company’s policy begin to be more firm in this sense. They have already clarified that moderators will be able to review private chats and now another action is added: the dismantling of one of the app’s functions.
The “People Nearby” feature no longer works. Until now, any user could access the groups and accounts of people who lived nearby, without their phone numbers being made public. Now, This feature in Telegram has been removedand cannot be recovered even by downgrading to previous versions of the app.

After a small update on his official Telegram channel, Durov announced the small change. “We’ve removed the People Nearby feature, used by less than 0.1% of Telegram users, but i have had problems with bots and scammers“, he explained, adding that it will also be replaced in the future by another option called Nearby Businesses. It would act similarly to its predecessor, focused only on businesses.
People Nearby exposed us to other profiles and groups of people who lived in the same area as us. It also helped the user join local groups, as well as meet other people. According to Durov, This feature has not been used by too many peopleand granted bandwidth to scammers or bots to harass users.
So the release of this feature shouldn’t cause too much of a stir among Telegram users.
