Samsung and LG have one thing in common besides being South Korean tech manufacturers. Both companies are known for creating the best quality displays available on the market. That’s why their smart TVs are so popular. However, their TVs have a common problem and that is their operating system which is not compatible with Kodi.
That’s right, Samsung and LG Smart TVs aren’t compatible with Kodi as standard. That’s why when you search for Kodi in the app store, nothing shows up. We don’t know if these South Korean companies will bring the Kodi app to their TVs in the future, but for now, all you can do is what we’ll explain below.
How to install Kodi on Samsung or LG Smart TV
As seen on the official Kodi page, this app is only available for Windows, Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, macOS, iOS and tvOS. It doesn’t have a version for TizenOS or webOS, which are the operating systems of Samsung and LG TVs respectively.
So what can you do to get Kodi on your Samsung or LG TV? Well, connect a dongle or TV box that changes the operating system to another, such as Android TV, Google TV or Firefox.
In particular, we recommend Chromecast with Google TV (it costs 40 euros) because it is the best in terms of performance and compatibility, although you can buy anything as long as it is on Android (stay away from Roku).
Steps to install Kodi on Google TV
Once the Google TV dongle is connected to your Samsung or LG TV, do the initial setup and follow these steps to install Kodi.
Click the “Search apps and games” bar. Type Kodi and search for it. Select Kodi and then click Install.
Steps to install Kodi on Android TV
If you’ve purchased a TV box with Android TV, installing Kodi on your Samsung or LG TV is pretty easy, although the steps you’ll need to follow are slightly different from the Google TV steps we’ve seen before:
Go to Apps section. Select Google Play Store. Search for Kodi. Select Kodi and then click Install.
Steps to install Kodi on Fire OS (Fire TV).
If you bought an Amazon Fire TV device for Samsung or LG TV, you need to do the following to install Kodi on it.
that’s all! As you can see, unfortunately there is no way to install Kodi on a Samsung or LG Smart TV except with an external dongle or TV box. But if Kodi officially comes to these TVs in the future, we’ll update this entry to let you know.
