The arrival of color E-Ink screens has raised the bar for making reading comics and manga more enjoyable. In that market Xiaomi and Onyx shine with excellent proposals. However, the latter is the one that is leading the way with the presentation of really interesting innovations, something they have demonstrated with devices like the BOOX Tab Ultra C and BOOX Tab Mini C, and now they have done it again. A hybrid between eReader and mobile phone like we’ve never seen and we love it. Is this what a market niche that is just emerging looks like?
The BOOX P6 Pro is a device that It is not an electronic reader, nor a cell phone, but both at the same time, a hybrid in all respects. This device is very reminiscent of the BOOX Palma presented in 2023, with which it shares numerous technical specifications. However, it differs from it in four key elements:
- You can add a SIM to provide it with 5G connectivitysomething we hadn’t seen until now. Its best rivals remain in WiFi or 4G/LTE connectivity (which this one also has). With this you can sync your library or download content while you are away from home, as well as being capable of making VoIP calls. Of course, there is no official information on traditional calls or SMS.
- The BOOX P6 Pro has a version, the Color, which has a Kaleido 3 panel capable of reproducing up to 4096 colorsin addition to the basic model with monochromatic panel. That is, you have two options to choose from.
- BOOX P6 Pro Color includes a stylus for drawing and taking notes. The standard model is only compatible with capacitive pens (like the Palma).
- It has Android 13 instead of Android 11a version that may sound old to many of us, but which is very valid for this type of device. Plus, it’s enough to give you access to a large number of updated apps, especially since Onyx keeps the ground breaking for install apps from other ecosystems (Kindle, Kobo, Libby, etc.).
For the rest of the specifications it is very similar to the BOOX Palma, although not exactly the same. For example, the monochrome screen is still 6.13″, with a resolution of 824 x 1648 pixels, a density of 300 ppi and E-Ink Carta 1300 certification. However, the Kaleido 3’s display reduces its density to 150 ppi when displaying colors. The latter seems bad, but is typical of Color E-Ink screens (for now).
The BOOX P6 Pro’s processor remains an eight-core Qualcomm SoC and comes with 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of storage in the base model. However, the BOOX P6 Pro Color has 8 GB of RAM.
The rear camera remains the same in both variants, with 16 MP and flash. The same thing happens with sound (stereo speakers), 3950 mAh battery15W charging and Bluetooth 5.0. The design changes slightly at the rear compared to the Palma.
