Android 16'S Sweet Name Makes No Sense

In case you didn’t know, since the launch of its first alpha version, Google has a tradition of naming each Android version after a dessert in alphabetical order.. It all started with Android 1.0 Alpha called Apple Pie and continued with Android 1.1 Beta known as Banana Bread.

Until now this custom had been maintained. Android 15, the latest version announced, is known internally as Vanilla Ice Cream. And following the order, Android 16 should be named after a dessert with a letter «W». However, Google decided to break with this legendary tradition.

That’s how things are Android 16 will be the first version that does not follow this tradition. And the name of the dessert has just been leaked and will not be called “Waffle” or “Pastry shop” as many thought. Below, we reveal the sweet name of Android 16 and explain why it is called that.

Google doesn’t follow tradition: the name of Android 16’s dessert is Baklava

The Name Of Android 16'S Dessert Is Baklava

As the story reveals Android developer newsThis weekend Google added the first lines of code to AOSP that reference the next version of Android. This was then confirmed Baklava is the name of Android 16’s dessert and that the tradition of alphabetical order is broken.

Don’t know what it is? Well, that’s all a dessert from Turkish, Iranian and Arabic cuisine which is prepared with pistachio paste or chopped walnuts. Now, everything seems to indicate that the choice of «Baklava» in fact the sweet name of Android 16 was not accidental and Google intends to restart this tradition.

Why isn’t Android 16 named after a dessert with the letter “W”?

Because Android 16 Doesn'T Have A Dessert With The Letter W As Its NameBecause Android 16 Doesn'T Have A Dessert With The Letter W As Its Name

It seems that you don’t choose a dessert with the letter «W» for the code name Android 16 has a logical reason. Recently, Google has reformed the way the operating system is developed. And the first version that emerged from this change was Android 14 QPR2 (Upside Down Cake) which instead of having a build ID that starts with the letter «U»changed to one that starts with the letter “A”.

And this change in how IDs are named has been retained with the latest official release, Android 14 QPR3. Experts estimate that the latest this year will be Android 15 QPR1 which will carry a similar ID name «AP4A.241205.0XX» AND? Android 16 will have a build ID starting with the letter “B” which will be launched next year.

So everything seems to point to it Google will now consider your Android version’s build ID to choose the name of your dessert. This would explain why Android 16 is codenamed Baklava and not a sweet with the letter «W». In practice they took advantage of this to reset the alphabetical order of desserts.

And you… Do you think Google should have continued the tradition until it reached the letter Z?
